Feature & Follow Friday

FF 2012 Feature & Follow #104
This week's question:
Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

I've literally thought about this for hours now and I can't come up with a book that made me "jump on a genre". It's more like I'm not at that point yet. I will read contemporary fiction and urban fantasy and a few dystopians over and over again - no place for other genres :( I'm trying to get into it, though. I love to read hystorical fiction from time to time and I think I'm going to start picking up some thrillers or crime novels or sci-fi. What I'd really like to try too is Manga and everything similar ( also comics) but I've no idea where to start in that department...

  1. Mangas are excellent and if you want to read Sci-fi and are a fan of UG try the Sirantha Jax Series by ann Aguire.

  2. I havent read any Mangas... but I hear good things. I know what you mean though... why switch a genre when you have SO many books to read in the genre you like?

  3. OOoh! I haven't really read mangas I don't think, but I have read a few, and have like 3 of 4 more in my TBR piles--graphic novels based on some of my fave books/series!

Like Vampire Academy, The Parsol Protectorate, The Hollows, Hush, Hush and soon to come The Fever series!--not it's name but I am totally mindblanking at the moment!

A good historical fiction book is The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava! It has vampire history weaved in, Vlad and some other stuff that I can't recall.

Another historical author I read before my paranormal streak began was a few books by Sarah Dunant! They were based in the Italian Renaissance and I loved them! Part of it may have been due that I went to Italy my senior spring break trip, but still! Loved them!

And sorry for the long ramble post! I tend to ramble, which you'll soon learn since your my newest follower! Returning the follow! ;)

    Have a GREAT weekend!

    1. Back again!!

See I love to talk! Especially about books, among other things!!

I see you're currently reading Shadowland by Meg Cabot! I have to say that I LOVE that series! It was one of my first paranormal ones! I read it years ago, and have the totally awesome and totally retro covers when Meg wrote under Jenny Carroll! They were great! I even have the cover that does not match at all of Haunted by Meg Cabot--when the series first went under her name and had a whole new look! And the hardcover of the 6th book too when the series again got a whole new look!

      I went bonkers both times I found book 5 & 6!

Okay, leaving again as I see I wrote another big paragraph!! Hee hee! I did say I loved to talk about books and stuff!

    2. Wow, great comment(s) :) It's so nice of you to take the time to write such a long, detailed comment! And it was actually very helpful! I Love getting recommendations from people and I especially needed some for historical ficton. I love reading about history but I never seem to find the right books..so thanks so much again!!

  4. Ok for scifi I definitely recommend Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi, ignore the cover, the book is fabulous. Zoey is a witty and funny character the story is interesting and filled with surprises and tense scenes and its just great. It's #4 in a series of books but you do not need to read the first 3 books because it's a companion story not a sequel and I didn't read the first 3 books.

For manga I always recommend Dramacon by Svetlana Chmakova for new manga readers its a fun and funny series filled with lovable characters and it's only 3 volumes long. There is also an omnibus version that has 3 of the volumes in 1 book.

    1. Ohh! Awesome, awesome, awesome! I'm getting so many recomendations this week - it's amazing! So that Manga Series is added to the TBR list and will be picked up as soon as possible :) That's the one genre I have never even glanced at until now!

  7. Great Answer. I really do think this is a hard question. I mean I get we all stick to genres we like and don't really stray. I mean I basically stumbled upon Dystopian. At least you want to try something new. Following through GFC and Twitter. Thanks for visitingMy FF

    1. I find that hearing people rave about a certain genre or book really motivates me to come out of my hiding place and try something totally different!

  8. Manga is also something new to me! I've tried a comic this year, but I didn't like the drawing style :) but I'm definitely planning on trying another.

    1. I'm planning to do that, too! I would love to be that girl that reads comics and manga and stuff like that. Although I should probably stop judging a book by its readers' reputation :D

    1. Well...it's okay. There are definitely genres that I've left untouched completely and I'd like to change that :)

  10. I 'jumped' genres a while ago and now I've moved genres. I absolutely love the new genres I've found though that I am now finding it hard to jump genres too. I really want to give historical fiction a try but I just never pick any up! "/

  14. I'm usually not a fan of sci-fi. I think that might be one genre I'll try to stay clear from. I haven't read a lot of manga, but I suggest High School Debut and Cactus's Secret. The first one is about 13 volumes long and the last one is only 4 volumes. I've yet to finish either series, but I absolutely love the drawings.
